Re: [iot-wg] documentation example

+1 for what David said!

If I recall correctly the main issue with that was, that it was not possible to host such a documentation outside of readme.io. Also readme.io seems to require a paid subscription in order to host documentation. If that is the case for all projects I am not sure that recommending this as a default platform for open source project documentation is good idea.

So maybe there is a way to use readme.io, based on the same documentation content, in addition to something free (both in beer and speech).

Maybe someone with experience on readme.io can explain this a bit better.

Cheers

Jens

Hi Brad,

The Eclipse Kura project also requested to use Readme.io. The general message was the Eclipse foundation discourages hosting content outside of Eclipse’s infrastructure (Github being the notable exception). We would certainly be interested in using Readme if this is something Eclipse would consider. Eurotech uses Readme for our commercial product documentation and have also had lots of positive feedback.

Thanks,

On the working group call today there was a request to get information on how some other projects do docs. For Che our docs are here: https://eclipse-che.readme.io/docs/

This is using the Readme.io platform which is free for open source projects. The platform is easy to use and it's default styles are easy to read. Additionally anyone can suggest edits to a page and those are pulled together for admins to review and accept (merge) or reject.

We've gotten many positive comments from users on these docs.

But...we're actually thinking of moving away from this platform for one reason: contributors are more comfortable doing docs in markdown in GitHub. So we are moving toward putting our docs into a subdirectory in the GitHub repo and then use a tool (there are many) to generate static HTML based on those pages with the addition of a left-nav, etc...

For projects that don't really need or want a lot of contributor documentation then Readme is fantastic.

Regards,
Brad
