Re: [iot-pmc] PMC Approval required for Committer Election for Katherine Wolf on Eclipse VOLTTRON

Unless there is any input from the project or concerns from the PMC, I would propose to -1 this request.

Hi everyone,

I was hoping to see some response from the project team on Kai's request.

Here are my thoughts:

* We work under the "Open Source Rules of Engagement" -> https://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/#2_1_Open_Source_Rules_of_Engagement
* Becoming a committer needs to be earned by contributing to a project. These contributions must be transparent to all. But especially to the PMC, because we give the +1
* Every project has the right to define its own rules (its own bar) on what it takes to become a committer. However, this needs to be transparent to everyone. And needs to be applied to all possible committers equally.
* I think there is common understanding on the IoT PMC (and I guess on other PMCs as well) that having steady stream of (code, docs,…) contributions, visible on GitHub is enough to become a committer, and so we don't need projets to formalize anything (unless they want to deviate from that)

In this case:

a) To me the contributions of Katherine are not transparent … I simply cannot verify this.
b) If "tracking down information needed to put third party libraries through the CQ process" is enough to become a committer on the voltron project, then I think this deviates from our common understanding and should be documented. Because to me, this would be the bar for future committer elections of this project.

So I think it would help to have the thoughts of the project as well. Maybe we are missing something.

In general, I know it takes a bit to understand how Eclipse projects work (same for open source projects in general). But you also have two mentors (one of them being me) which can help. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out. If you are waiting for an answer, please send a reminder.

I think a quick chat/call could help to get a better understanding.

Cheers

Jens

Hi Volttron committers,

I am sorry but FMPOV helping with gathering information required for the
IP process does not constitute the kind of merit that we have usually
have in mind when we talk about a committer's achievements.

Maybe Katherine can first get involved with the project's content a
little more and thus establish a track record of contributions that can
also be seen in the repository ?

@other PMC members: WDYT?
