Re: [iot-pmc] Discussion about Eclipse Mosquitto

I just saw two nominations by Roger on the mosquitto-dev mailing list. So I think we can close this discussion :)

I really appreciate the outcome!

Thanks

Seeing Pierre’s and Tatsuzo’s track record and commitment, this looks like an excellent opportunity to keep the project going. Thus it seems to be a wise choice to nominate them as committers to better distribute the workload. Unless anyone comes up with a good reason to veto such a nomination, I’d be in full support of this.

Jens, all,

I agree with the idea of voting in new committers, which would I like solve the short term issue of the many PRs (even trivial ones which, IMO, should always be merged ASAP to keep the contributors engaged and confident in the upstream project) accumulating.
I think for the time being we should probably leave Roger time to get back to, hopefully, have time to spend on Mosquitto, but we should also be conscious that if this doesn’t happen, the project may also require new co-leader(s) so that releases can effectively be performed (which seems to be what Pierre and Tatsuzo are interested in pushing for in GH issue 473).-

Should we proceed with a formal vote from the PMC to ask EMO to nominate Pierre and Tatsuzo as committers?

Hi PMC,

I would like to spark a discussion about the current state of the Mosquitto project.

A few months back the PMC has been made aware of the fact that the project currently seems to be unresponsive. Issue #473 [1] probably summarizes the situation quite good.

The PMC also tried a few times over the last months to get into a discussion with Roger Light on how to improve this situation. Unfortunately all attempts have been unsuccessful.

We could declare the project dysfunctional, but I would hope that there is an alternative to that.

If this is simply due to missing time for working on the project from the existing project members (which is understandable) then I guess the most simple solution would be to grow the active community. Vote in new committers which have shown some merit. Let them help out with triaging and fixing bugs, reviewing PRs, preparing releases, … getting things done.

There already has been a discussion on the "mosquitto-dev" mailing list [2] proposing two new committers to the project. The PMC could ask EMO to nominate those two candidates on behalf of the project.

Please really see this as an invitation to discuss this topic. What do you think? What are your ideas?

Cheers

Jens

PS: The PMC already discussed during EclipseCon Europe to conduct a review of projects early next year. If anyone has concerns about the state of an Eclipse IoT project, please feel free to contact the PMC. Either on this mailing list (preferred but on a new thread) or in a private e-mail.
