Re: [ice-dev] "Big Four modeling and simulation activities" not defined

Les,

Thanks for your email! I'm rather excited that someone read that old page. It isn't as bad as our official history page on the wiki, btw! ;-)

Joking aside, that is an old page with some outdated text that, yes, needs some clean up. The "Big Four" is a term that I invented to describe the activities in the rest of the document, which was originally the project proposal. For a more thorough and accurate discussion, I would recommend our paper, which is under review right now, that discusses these four activities (and development) as part of a workflow model focused on modeling and simulation. You can find a pre-print of that paper here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.01398

Thanks very much for reaching out and please do let me know if you have additional thoughts.

Subject: [ice-dev] "Big Four modeling and simulation activities" not defined

This page:

https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/science.ice

references "the Big Four modeling and simulation activities" several
times. However there is no full definition or description on the page
of what are these activities, or where they come from as seeming
standard set of concerns (i.e. history and choice of those four
activities whatever they are; other projects and efforts addressing
"the Big Four" as such, and so on.). Please at least list and define
these 4 activities on the page.

BTW Google searching shows no other pages or projects beyond Eclipse
ICE that uses the term "Big Four modeling and simulation activities".
If that is true, it would seem to be better to organize a project like
ICE around a widely shared conception of what are the core tasks for
modeling & simulation needing integrated support, rather than what
looks like a term/set ("Big Four") that may be idiosyncratic to ICE.

Best,

- Les Gasser
