Re: [ice-dev] Development of data-analytics capability in Eclipse

Ian,

Thanks very much for the email. I'm sorry the list bounced you. You are welcome to join it if you want!

I am very interested in your work and I would definitely like to discuss it further. It sounds like it could be a good addition to ICE. What's your schedule like?

Jay

Hi there JJ,

I've tried to send the enclosed email to the Ice Dev list (as
indicated on the ICE Wiki), but the mail has been bounced.  I presume
the list is members only to avoid all that spam.

Anyway, I'd appreciate you having a quick look over my request/offer,
and if you think it has merit, to handle it as appropriate.

cheers,
Ian

Subject: Development of data-analytics capability in Eclipse
Hi there,
I'm the maintainer of an eclipse-based application used for analysis
of maritime trials & experiments involving ships, submarines, and
aircraft (www.debrief.info).

My analysts have a fresh requirement - to introduce a data analysis
capability that allows them to load multiple time-series of data
measurements, clean those datasets, then combine/view/manipulate those
datasets in the conduct of their analysis.  For example, if two series
of LENGTH measurements are selected, the library would know that a new
LENGTH series can be created by combing them, subtracting one from the
other to give the absolute difference,  subtracting & scaling to
produce the relative difference, or multiplying together to give an
AREA series.

The library would also understand the difference between Continuous,
Discrete and Categorical time series - offering (for example) to
produce a frequency histogram of Categorical data, bar chart of
Discrete data, or to calculate the integral/differential of a
Continuous time series dataset.

A Data Analysis RCP view would perform descriptive analysis of one or
more selected time series - including the typical Max, Min, Range,
Count, SD, Mean, etc when one or more suitable series of are selected.

Whilst the capability will form part of my application, in "Open
Source spirit" I'm trying to consider if/how it could be exploited in
the wider Eclipse community.

I've been aware of ICE for some time, and have suggested that one body
of my users (who use Debrief to analyse results data from a
heavyweight simulator) consider ICE as a way of interacting with their
simulator.

But, I've also just realised that if I keep my design/implementation
generic enough, the capability may prove of value to ICE.

Is there anybody in the ICE team that would like to discuss this
development?  I'm a little intimidated at the thought of "integrating"
with such a large & mature Eclipse project - but I'm happy to give it
a go :-)

Cheers,
Ian
