We were able to distill our HDF dependency down to 5 packages:

ncsa.hdf.object

ncsa.hdf.object.h4

ncsa.hdf.object.h5

ncsa.hdf.hdflib

ncsa.hdf.hdf5lib

Which, if I recall correctly, are neatly contained and have no additional dependencies.
