Re: [hono-dev] First Milestone for Hono

+1 for release even without security enforced. That would allow early adopters to experiment with Hono and to create proofs of concept for integrations. In particular I could try to create a POC of Hono+Kapua integration as soon as Kapua and Hono GA 1 are out.

Cheers!

Dear community,

some of you may have already noticed throughout the last months, that Henryk
Konsek (Hono's Co-Project Lead) has been less often seen on the mailing list and
the commit log. This is not because of a lack of interest but simply due to the
fact, that he also became a committer on the Eclipse Kapua project [1] which he
will be focusing on for some time to come. One of his tasks there will actually
be the integration of Kapua with Hono, a combination which we feel will be
beneficial for both projects.

In the meantime, my feeling is that we are close to doing a first milestone (0.5-
M1) which will include an implementation of the Telemetry API and a simple
implementation of Device Registration and authorization. We are currently still
struggling with Authentication. From a mere technical perspective, we are able to
authenticate (and authorize) clients in both Hono Server as well as in Dispatch
Router. However, we are lacking a common identity management component that both
Hono Server and the Dispatch Router can use for central management of identities
and authorizations. We are currently evaluating options there but my feeling is
that we will probably make the M1 without security enforced, i.e. allowing for
anonymous access as well. Once we agree on a strategy for central identity and
authorization management, we can incrementally add mandatory authentication back
to Hono and provide more milestones including our progress in that area. Any
suggestions in that area are more than welcome :-)

I am also interested in your opinion regarding doing an M1 without full fledged
security enforcement in place. Any thoughts?
