Re: [epp-dev] Marketplace Client

+ 1 from me including some comments and questions:

* I've seen the MPC in action in the RCP and Java M6 packages
* I'd like to keep the packages a bit consistent and having the MPC client in all packages sounds good to me
* Can we handle the server load? I.e. what will happen after the final release when many many many people will try to use the MPC to send queries to the marketplace server?
* Are there other scalability issues that we need to address?
* What about the quality of content? I haven't looked at the MPC in the past few weeks but do you handle the case when a user searches for something and the MPC does not contain a URL to a repository at all || does contain a wrong URL to a repository || contains a URL to a broken repository? This could lead to some frustration of the end users.

Regards, Markus

Hi Ian,

I'll ask you some questions I'd ask anyone else who wanted to include something in the packages I maintain ... so nothing personal :)  ... in rough order of priority:

a. You'll test it? (I'd assume spot testing a different couple of distributions each RC?)
b. How big is it?
c. Is there somewhere I can "see it in action"? Are the M6 distributions suitable? A more recent Java Package?

Conceptually it sounds ok ... I'd just like to see some of the detail.

Thanks,

All,

The Eclipse Foundation has been working on a new Eclipse plugin called the Marketplace Client (MPC). MPC allows developers to directly install into their Eclipse installation a product that has been listed on the Eclipse Marketplace.   The hope is that it make it much easier for developers to find and install Eclipse products.

MPC is being developed as an open source project and is part of the release train.   An initial release was included in the Java IDE and RCP M6 packages.   The goal is to include it in all of the packages for Helios  (with the exception of the Classic).   I would like to suggest that MPC is automatically added, via Markus, to all of the packages; similar to how we do UDC.   This would make it easier and consistent for all the package maintainers.

I appreciate this is too late for the M7 packages but I would like to start doing this for RC1.   Is this okay with everyone?   MPC is an important initiative of the Eclipse Foundation, so I am hoping to have your support.

Thanks
Ian
