I am proposing a patch for this issue:

As it would introduce incompatibilities, I would like to
collect
some opinions on the proposal.

'-1' is the value used internally to represent
unset.
'0' would mean you would get no results. Seems there is no way to
unset
max results before executing the query without some inside knowledge.
