Dejan, we have prototype API that does exactly what you're looking for.  See IProgressManager.requestInUI.  The implementation is still crude (a non-modal dialog), but it illustrates the idea.  See the enhancement bug report for details or to add feedback:

Ideas on presentation welcome.  I suggested a windows-update style curvy message bubble coming out of the status line, but UI team wasn't too keen on the idea <g>.
