Re: [e4-dev] The state of e4-Tooling
|
Hi,
I'd like to remind you of the Xtext based editor prototyp for the
workbench which can be found here: http://github.com/meysholdt/e4dsl
It was demoed at the Eclipsecon 2010 http://www.eclipsecon.org/2010/sessions/?page=sessions&id=1191
and I think this is a valid approach to provide nice tooling for
application developers.
What do others think?

Sebastian

Hi,
I'm writing this mail because I think we really need to discuss the
state and investment into e4-Tooling which is *0* at the moment (I
don't
know about Yves but talk about my Application-Model-Editor).
I've started last year my efforts on the editor around March because
it
looked like 4.0 would come without a useable Application-Model-Editor
(which would have been - though bad - acceptable for 4.0) which would
make our whole cool modeled application useless for an application
developer.
This time I'd like to bring up this topic a bit earlier because if
we'd
really like to advertise Eclipse 4.1 as a platform to develop
applications ontop of the new Eclipse 4.0 Application Platform we'd
have
to ship with a first class tooling.
I'm 100% aligned with the current strategy that 100% of the Platform
Team in Ottawa is working on make the Indigo release work on 4.1, fix
wholes, improve speed, ... but I'd like to wake up those people who
think they can get first class support from Eclipse 4.1 to write their
new world RCP-Application because this will *not* happen.
I'm currently not working on the tooling and don't see how I can
invest
unpayed time into it until end of Q1 because I'll have to earn money
in
my day job.
So if nooneelse steps up or I can find some excuse to work on it
you'll
be stuck with what you've got with 4.0 which is useable but by far not
production quality.
Tom
