Recently, I
discussed setting up Eclipse for a mobile development with a developer. What
was quite striking was the procedure the developer used. For years now the
developer had followed the advice all over the web of download Eclipse,
download EclipseME, download the Sun WTK. The developer had even checked via
Google search to see if the advice was still current, and found all the
articles that he had been seeing for years listing the above setup process.
When actually
building the development environment, he followed the procedure: download
Eclipse, download EclipseME, etc. The developer simply went to each site,
ignored everything on the page except the download button/link, and never
noticed all the discussion on the EclipseME site about MTJ. While he ended up
with a workable EclipseME environment, there were bugs that he encountered
that we have fixed in MTJ.
So my request. If
you have have posted, or know someone who has posted instructions on the web
or internally at your company on how to set up a mobile development
environment, please take a few minutes to update the instructions to indicate
MTJ instead of EclipseME for new development environments. If you see outdated
instructions on the web, take a moment to send feedback to the author that the
page is out of date and needs to be refreshed. (I see as top hits in
Google recommendations to download Eclipse 3.0.1 and EclipseME
0.7!)
For some projects
that need a long term stable environment, EclipseME may be the most
appropriate solution. But for new development environments and projects, I
hope we all agree that MTJ now provides a better solution for developers. (If
not, please make suggestions for improvement here!!)
