thanks for having pointing that out. I used to be aware about the fact that there’s a specific update site for the platform milestones, but it seems I forgot and now got irritated by the fact that http://download.eclipse.org/releases/mars is populated while  http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/4.5/ is not.

Yes, that site is mostly empty, and I think that's intentional.  I believe you'll want to use http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/4.5milestones until 4.5 is actually released.
