Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] Joint N&N page for the release train
|
Doing a release train N&N for each
milestone would be a lot of ongoing work for each project, and then for
someone doing the aggregation/editing/cleanup to make it present well.
If there are volunteers to do this, then great.
If that is too much, I wonder if an
alternative would be to essentially have a draft of the final Mars "what's
new" page that we iterate over the milestones. This is marketing material
that we prepare anyway in June, but instead we would start putting out
a draft of this for an earlier milestone. For example this is the one from
last year: http://eclipse.org/luna/
Of course the page would have to make
it clear that the release is still in June, and that it's a "what's
new so far". So could we publish eclipse.org/mars starting with M6,
and have large text at the top saying something like, "Eclipse Mars
is coming in June 2015. Developer preview builds are now available here.
Here are some highlights of the upcoming release ...". The exact
list of highlights could evolve as we get closer to the release..

Joint N&N page for the release train

At one point, I had considered making a "New and
Noteworthy" record type in the PMI. I'm not convinced, however, that
it really belongs in the PMI. It's too far away from the actual code.
As I said in my earlier note, I think that this needs to be closer to the
code. Perhaps is a feature of features.

Hi
A mishmash is certainly undesirable, but they are indirected and maybe
a style consensus might materialize. (Maybe the PMI might even help format
it).
If the PMI doesn't help, we have to introduce a new all-projects database/HTML
file.

The PMI has a single field that you can use to record
a link. IMHO, a mishmash of links with N&N in different formats isn't
very useful.

Hi
I think the PMI has/can have a full list of all the N&Ns, so is it
possible for the PMI to create an N&N index similar to the Help Documentation
index so that the Platform N&N links to the overall N&N index?
Impact one line per project in an index.
If we want a 'three item' overview, perhaps the PMI could supervise a list
of overview N&N's.

Hi Marcel,
I think the correct solution would be to extend the purpose of the Platform
N&N to include newsitems from the EPP side.

Greetings cross-projects,
I’d like to get your thoughts about a joint N&N page
for Mars Milestones.
The platform maintains a N&N page [1] for changes
on the Platform/JDT/PDE. All press releases, blogs and tweets about new
milestones are pointing to this page and as such it is the most prominent
place to present new features, what’s new and upcoming in Eclipse.
However, IMHO there are much more noteworthy things to
talk about. For instance, the addition of the automated error reporting
in all EPP packages is such a noteworthy item but it cannot be published
on that page because it does not belong to the SDK. I guess many projects
have interesting N&N as well. While larger projects with a community/
popular webpage will certainly write a blog post about their new features.
Smaller ones with no prominent website or large community lack such a space.
In addition, bloggers etc. will certainly not browse all project blogs
to find all N&Ns.
Thus I wonder whether we should have a joint N&N page
for the whole release train where every participating project could put,
say, up to 3 items per Milestone release with a picture and a short paragraph
(as the SDK already does).
What do others think?
Marcel
P.S.: FWIW, every EPP package download page *has* a N&N
link in the side menu where EPP packages can add their N&N links. However,
it’s not used much and likely is not very popular (at least I assume that
b/c I noticed it the very first time today).
