Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] Updating packages on mac results in broken install

At this point I'm highly sure that the package will not suffer any problem when updating....
As for the fix, I think we need to regenerate a new IU with a new version that contain the fix for the bogus metadata, which means regenerating the top level IU for the packages. I'm afraid that if we don't do this, it will super painful to figure out update issues should they occur again.

My suggested way of proceeding would be to

- leave the SR2 Mac OSX packages as they are because I couldn't find the problem in them and

- wait for a few more people successfully testing the fixed metadata in the http://download.eclipse.org/technology/epp/packages/helios/SR2.fixed repository; if this turns out to be a successful fix I would re-enable the update of the packages tomorrow / Monday.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Markus

I can install successfully using the new repo.
I assumed that the EPP package IUs were in the helios repository which is why I talked about a "respin". What I meant was more "we need to fix it" :).
Thx for the quick turnaround.

In order to get some time for investigation I disabled the update of the EPP packages (see my comment on the bug).

* I tried to update from SR1 to SR2 and my last tests just yesterday on Linux didn't show any problems.
* So far I think it is a problem in the package metadata only, i.e. there is no need to respin SR2.

Thanks, Markus

Hello,

The news arrived a little bit earlier today in my inbox, updating an EPP package on a mac results in a broken install since the eclipse.ini file is being deleted: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=338310

After some investigation it looks like the root cause may be that the launcher name used for the packages changed from eclipse to Eclipse (Bug 338320).

Two things:
1) Could it be verified that the update is working on other platforms?
2) Assuming that this is an issue only for the Mac and it is indeed a problem with the package metadata, should we respin SR2.

Thx
