[cdt-dev] How to partially implement enhancement request?

I have found an enhancement request (Bug 138598 ) that I plan to
partially implement. In my company we need some of the features, mainly
the possibility to set other extension types, and I have been given
green light to spend some time to fix that. Now I wonder which is the
best way to handle this? Should I submit a patch to the bug and explain
in detail which features have been implemented? If the patch is
accepted will this bug then be closed and a new one created with the
remaining features in? Or should I create a new bug for the features I
am going to implement and relate it to the original one?
