I've never really had an issue installing cygwin. I always install the full thing to get the full cygwin experience :-)

But, if you are having trouble with cygwin, you might want to bring it up with the cygwin folks.

is there any proper guide for the minimum install?
from my last experience i must say that cygwin is way more of a config
mess than any real linux distribution...
