Ok, it was a very short notice :-) Call canceled for now.
If you meet with Mitch on JavaOne, perhaps you can find some time to
talk about this? I won't be there so I'll try to outline my concerns and
suggestions here:
Concern:
We cannot work together on the same code base today so even if I can try
your patches when they arrive, I cannot modify them when I do
refactoring that might have an impact. Even if I do, since you're hardly
idling, I cannot send them back to you unless I create patches on the
patches. Subsequently, you need to keep track of all changes and provide
new patches. Also, there's no way for me to try things out and if the
outcome is good, to check things in. All in all, very troublesome.
You're not a committer at Eclipse and even if you were, the code must
still go through the IP process before it can be checked in. I'm not a
committer at Apache.
Proposed solution:
I think we should host the project somewhere outside of Eclipse.org. It
should be at a place where we can use SVN and where we can host an
update site. If I can become a (restricted) committer at Apache, I think
it would be ideal to host it next to other Maven projects. If not, let's
find some other place.
Concern:
If we move our stuff out of Eclipse.org, it lessens Maven visibility
within Eclipse and it also makes it more difficult for other projects
that would like to embed maven technology.
Solution:
We must continue the IP clearance for the Maven artifacts with the
objective to move the buckminster.maven plugin back into the Buckminster
SVN when everything has been cleared.
Concern:
There's no way we can make the IP clearance come through in time to get
the new plug-in into the Europa release. As things stand today, we must
deliver our own home-brewed and somewhat limited Maven provider.
Solution:
If we have an external update site, we could make our Europa feature
reference plug-ins hosted there. A reference is allowed as long as no
GPL licenses are involved.
Action items:
Mitch,
If you haven't done so already, please provide Carlos with information
regarding the exact info he must provide in order for the IP process to
continue.
Carlos,
Barring objections to my proposed solutions ;-) can you investigate what
the best collaboration location for the project would be?
Regards,
Thomas Hallgren
