Plugins for SQL, HTML, XML etc? [message #99386] Sun, 04 September 2005 17:26 Go to next message

I would like to files of the following type from within Eclipse
and I am wondering how to best figure out what plugins exist.
When I do Google searches on this I usually get tons of
irrelevant pages or pages about remotely related commercial
products. Is there a better way to find (free) plugins?

- SQL: files containing table and index creation statements
for Postgres and MySQL
- HTML/XML/HTML Templates: these are mainly files that contain
program-generated XML or HTML template files as used
by the perl library HTML::Template. So there are no DTDs
or they are similar to HTML/XHTML but contain additional tags.
- Javascript

Any recommendations or tips about how to best find out what is out there?

First, the best place to look for Eclipse plug-ins is
http://www.eclipse-plugins.info - it contains info about commercial
plug-ins, free/open-source plugins, and Eclipse.org extensions.

Specifically, there are lots of SQL editor plugins. I've used several of
them, but cant recommend any over the others. The site above includes a
Database category with like 50+ entries.

XMLBuddy is an excellent XML editor, and can handle HTML/JSP at a
rudimentary level (syntax highlighting, checking validity of XHTML).
There is also the WTP project at eclipse.org (look for it under
Projects) that contains various tools for working with web application
files.

Javascript: I don't know if the WTP project include Javascript
capabilities or not, but I haven't seen any other plugins specifically
for that. Try searching the eclipse-plugins.info site.

A recommendation that will probably meet all your needs is MyEclipse
Enterprise Workbench (http://www.myeclipseide.com/) - it is a commercial
tool that provides lots of capabilities and is a bargain at just $30 per
year.

Eric

My biggest problem with this site is that it does not show
which of the listed plugins are free or opensource, so it
is tiresome to click each and go to the homepage to find out more.

Also the categories are very rough (a single category for
languages!!) and search is even more
generic, so you often have to scroll
a long list and try a lot of things -- finding out which of
all the different possibilities actually does what you want
and how they compare feature-wise seems very difficult and
time-demanding.
