the story is as below for your reference:

one of our customers are using our birt report solution(2.6.2). after the jboss has been running for a while, all the report could not be accessed 'cause the parameter diglogue just does not show up and the report could not continue since after. Only after restarting the related JVM , it goes back to normal. Could you help to show me how to troubleshoot this issue? all the CPU/Mem/Threadss(JVM and OS) were working fine.

Thanks
Steven

I've not heard of this happening before. Do you access by URL? If so, you can add the __parameterpage=true parameter to the url and see if it helps.

Hi, Micheal

Thanks for your tips. I tried,i.e.,<IP:port/scereports/frameset?__report=report/ZTE_***2.rptdesign&poptions=l&__parameterpage=true> but without anythingreceived in the returned page.

So i just want to trace the related servelets to troubleshooting this issue. Could you help to share some skills regarding this or any other ways to find the root cause?

Thanks
Steven

I wonder if this is related to the memory leak issue that was in 2.6.2. Do you get any errors or anything? Have you checked the log files? Is there any way you can upgrade your BIRT runtime version? You also might try just redownloading the viewer/runtime.

Hi, Micheal

Here is the birt runtime error flooding within the log file and the related java file could be found here @h-t-t-p-:-/-/opensourcejavaphp.net/java/birt/org/eclipse/birt/data/engine/odaconsumer/ParameterMetaData.java.html.

Also wonder any bug with the JDBC(ojdbc.jar) version which could impact the birt viewer? our customer is using ojdbc6.jar with oracle 11g RAC.

I found a bug mentioned the above, h-t-t-p-s://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=384925

Is this a particular report that is running into the issue? Or are there many different reports? If just a single report, can you attach it in here? When you encounter this issue, if you use "run", in the url, rather than "frameset", does it make a difference?

this is for all the reports instead of just single one. now though the issue is not happening yet in customer site but interesting thing is that after change the mapping from frameset to run, the parameter dialogue could be displayed which could not work in frameset mapping even in the good condition for customer set.

our system does not access reports by directly typing the report url. Instead, the other module will read the url from oracle database which could be,i.e., </frameset?__report=report/Catch_Weight-Catch_Data_Packing_Slip.rptdesign&poptions=p> then access it in background. For the record, the report url records in the database are all frameset mapping, no run mapping.

Also wonder did you try adding some logs to the following tow servelets to troubleshooting the similar issues?

h-t-t-p://eclipsesrc.appspot.com/jsrcs/org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer/birt/WEB-INF/classes/org/eclipse/birt/report/utility/ParameterAccessor.java.html
h-t-t-p://eclipsesrc.appspot.com/jsrcs/org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer/birt/WEB-INF/classes/org/eclipse/birt/report/listener/ViewerServletContextListener.java.html

Thanks
Steven

FYI, this afternoon the issue happened again and the report could not be used again. but the parameter dialogue could be displayed and I found the below error regarding the xml parsing. this XML error could be mapped to a snapshot the end user provided to us.

Do you have the possibility to try using a newer runtime, like 3.7.2, in a test situation, to see if it encounters the same issue?

Hi, Micheal

I downloaded the runtime 3.7.2 and tried to replace the 2.6.2 lib folder jars with the jars from 3.7.2 but failed. could you let me know is there any practical upgrade document regarding how to upgrade the birt runtime from 2.6 to 3.7.2?

Thanks
Steven

Really, the upgrade would just be to set up a second deployment of the newer runtime and copy over your designs and test them. If everything works, then you switch out your current viewer, with the new one. Any initial testing for an upgrade might be easier with the designer, though. You definitely don't want to just switch your live production deployment. Smile

Hi, Micheal

Thanks for all the kind help Smile .

our BIRTreport module does not set up sticking to the original birt runtime architecture.

Basicly our birt war has been named scereports.war instead of birt.war based on the runtime 2.6.2 which is a little different from the folder architecture in 3.7.2. I tried to created the folder existing in 2.6.2 which 3.7.2 does not have and move the the report design files and related customized jar files from 2.6.2 to the cooresponding 3.7.2 folders and renamed the birt.war(3.7.2) to scereports.war. After that I tried to start the report server(JBoss based) and got the below error.

3.7 changed from the OSGi runtime to the POJO runtime. Though, 3.7.2 did offer the OSGi runtime again, as well. What folder did you add? With the pojo runtime, all your jar files just need to be in your class / build path.

Here is the detailed steps i used. I am wondering if i did not change the folder architecure, will the class path still need to explicitely added? if yes, how?

I downloaded the birt-runtime-3_7_2.zip and unzipped it as birt-runtime-3_7_2.
there is a birt.war file under the birt-runtime-3_7_2 folder and i compared it with our
scereports.war under <jboss-5.1.0.GA\server\sceup-reports1\deploy\scereports.war> which 90% of the content(folder architecure)
are the same which should be caused by the difference between 2.6.2 and 3.7.2.

Below is the difference:

1) the 3.7.2 version does not have lib folder under the folder of birt(unzipped from birt.war)
2) I created the lib folder under the birt folder and copied the jars in the scereports.war(unzipped) under the lib folder to the new created lib folder of birt folder.
3) birt 3.7.2 does not have platform and class folders under the /birt-runtime-3_7_2/birt/WEN-INF which i need to created and copy the related files to from scereports.war.
4) the content in the folder of /birt/WEB-INF/lib of 3.7.2 is not all the same with 2.6.2 so i need to copy all the jar files from 2.6.2 to the 3.7.2.
5)our scereports.war is deployed to <jboss-5.1.0.GA\server\sceup-reports1\deploy\scereports.war> using JbossAS 5.
6) jars under birt-runtime-3_7_2\ReportEngine\lib have not been used at all as i do not know how to use it.

after all the above steps, i tried to start the report service with the startup script.

Thanks
Steven

Hi, Micheal

I did not try the upgrade guide yet till now. I tried to simulate 400 concurrent users with 30000 requests targeting the birt report url(ip:8080/scereports) and it could make the report server hang and unusable for a while. After increasing the jboss http connector threads from 200 to 400, the old issue has been gone but a new issue occurred which is less frequently than before. I also found that there were some other birt users also reporting this new issue as well without solution provided in this link, could you help have a check?

Thanks

Hi, Michael

1)THe old issue occurred again last night, now i am quite sure this error caused the issue, someone told this is a bug(h-t-t-p://download.eclipse.org/birt/downloads/build.php?build=M-R1-4.2.1RC1-201208201733), but the weird if we are facing a bug, why it could not occure everytime, it just occurs after some hours.

If you've already made the jump to 3.7.2, 4.2 shouldn't cause much issue, but you should definitely test it out, first. You might give it a test run. Hopefully it helps!

HI, Michael

here is another question just wondering whether you are aware of. when our customer want to export a new report result which got from a new deployed report to the excel file by clicking the exporting icon, it will go to the parameter window instead of a window which shoudl ask you to save the excel file. it will come to normal after many hours instead of taking effect immediately after deployed. is this a known bug ?

Thanks
Steven

When you export a report to XLS from an already ran report, in the web viewer, it's popping up the parameter screen, for the XLS report? I've not heard of this, yet. If this is what you mean, please log a bug for this!

Hi Steven Chen,
Did you solve your problem:
"when our customer want to export a new report result which got from a new deployed report to the excel file by clicking the exporting icon, it will go to the parameter window instead of a window which shoudl ask you to save the excel file."
or did you report it as a bug?
