Language packs break Ganymede [message #12387] |

As soon as I have installed the Ganymede language packs (Englisch, German)
on the Ganymede release (for RCP/Plug-in Developers) it is not possible
any more to install or uninstall any other plugin (e.g. EclipsesNSIS or
Subclipse). The checking for dependencies takes a long time and then the
message "The software item you selected may not be valid with your current
installation..." appears. After uninstalling the German language pack
(this works!) and restarting Eclipse the splash screen flashes every 2
seconds and that's all. I reproduced the problem on a number of different
computers. Does anyone has the same problem?
Regards,
Frank.

Also on Vista?
I'd try replicate this, too, but if somebody did on XP already, then I
would not imagine it to be Vista-specific.
I had a slightly similar issue with WTP and either Subversive or a
similar plugin. Most likely still in Europa, but it may have been
previews of Ganymede.
So from this earlier experience, I doubt it is strictly limited to Babel
either.

Hi everyone.
I can confirm that the problem also fully exists on Win XP:
After installation of the German translations, it's impossible to add
additional features due to missing constraint errors.
Uninstalling the language pack results in the flashing splash screen
described before (by the way, the task manager shows that the process id
changes every time, so the flashing is caused by an endless sequence of
eclipse.exe restarts !)
After killing the process and restarting eclipse.exe with the -clean command
line option, everything works fine again (eclipse starts up correctly and
installation of new features works again.)
Well, actually there is another oddity: for my installation test I chose the
Java EE Development feature. The installation wizard shows an *empty* list
on the first page ("Install"), but indicates a total size of about 70 MB.
The second page on the other hand ("Review licenses") show all plugins. This
is probably an unrelated effect, but the whole thing is kind of strange
anyway...
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Christian

I had problems importing existing projects into a new workspace. It was
a problem in German translations, that prevents PDE from importing.
I corrected those erroneous translations, but I think Babel should check
translations beforehand.

I have a Ganymede Final installed on a German Windows OS.
Can you explain the steps to reproduce this a little more detailed?
I.e. also the Update URL you used for the German Language Pack.
Was it part of the Ganymede Update site or did you choose one from the
Babel site?
Regards,
Werner

I have the same problem. I need german translation pack only to export it
into my RCP application.
As a workaround you can start your IDE with the "-nl en_GB" parameter and
all works fine.

Cheers,
Christian

Hi,
I managed to install the translated Strings for my language *and* keep
being able to install new features, but it remains rather tedious. With
a ganymede installation :
1 - install babel for your language
2 - try and install a new feature, the list of all features with
unresolved dependencies appear on the lower half of the dialog that pops up
3 - retrieve the list of all these *nl_<country code> features and
remove them from your eclipse "plugins" dir
4 - remove the latest file in the
" p2/org.eclipse.equinox.p2.engine/profileRegistry/SDKProfile. profile "
directory of your eclipse installation
Now you have the translated Strings and you can add new features. Of
course, this also means you won't have the translated String for the
features you add later on ...
There may be an easier way of achieving this, but at least it allows us
to install babel translations.
Cheers

I had problems importing existing projects into a new workspace. It was
a problem in German translations, that prevents PDE from importing.
I corrected those erroneous translations, but I think Babel should check
translations beforehand.
