Bundles View?! Is there such a thing? [message #55031] Sat, 17 December 2005 10:12 Go to next message

Hi all.
In the company where I work we are developing and application
(MyApplication) based on OSGi but not based on Eclipse (it is not an
eclipse RCP). However we are using Eclipse to develop the bundles of
MyApplication which are then installed into an OSGi framework and so on...

Because we use Eclipse to develop the bundles we found it very useful to
have the functionality of OSGi console build into Eclipse.

So I made an eclipse view that displays the currently installed bundles.
Using this view one can install, start, stop and uninstall bundles from
the OSGi framework. We call this view - "Bundles View".
This view is very helpful to us in the process of developing bundles using
Eclipse.

What I would like to ask you is whether ther already is such a view
developed by someone else?

If there isn`t such a view I am ready to share the code of the view with
those that are insterested and think it is helpful to have the
functionality of OSGi console build into an Eclipse view.

Thanks.

Sounds like a good thing. You could open an enhancement request at bugs.eclipse.org and post your code as an attachment there; that way, even if the Eclipse developers don't integrate it your code will be available to others to use simply by searching the bug database.

Although I don't personally need it at the moment, it does sound like a nice idea.

Alex.

Hi there,

I am currently investigating Equinox. I am also interested in developing an application based on OSGi but without any Eclipse dependencies. Unfortunately,
I did not find any good documentation/demo/samples for
Equinox. Are you aware of anything along those lines for Equinox? Any suggestions and/or pointers is really appreciated.

Thanks,
John

I think it would be nice to have an OSGi console view too.

You should be able to follow the quick start guide for Equinox to get a
framework up and running. Form there you are in a standard OSGi world and
have all the power and responsibilities that entails. Where you thinking of
more than that?

I have not seen this come in but it does sound interesting. We are actively
pursuing some remote management technology so it would be interesting to see
what you are doing.

Hi,

you could also have a look at the oscar tutorial here:

http://oscar-osgi.sourceforge.net/tutorial/

and if you use the maven2 for your develpoment at the maven-osgi-plugin here:

http://docs.safehaus.org/display/OSGI/OSGi+Plugin+for+Maven+ 2.0

That and the Equinox qick start guide got me up an running.
