Hi everyone,
I applaud what the BIRT project is trying to do. It will probably change
the landscape for report-writing tools.
It will be free (as in Beer and Freedom)
It will be extensible and integratable with almost anything.
It will have a report developer GUI.
It is likely to get a large mind share because of this.
The BIRT project has no seed code, an unforgivable problem for an open
source project, which must be fixed for BIRT to attract developers. Even
an infrastructure would be nice to comment on (more than the existing
diagram). We cannot test what we cannot run. Hopefully I can contribute
something by belonging to this newsgroup at least. I don't know if
JasperReports would be appropriate as this seed (I feel an investigation
coming on), but it could be part of the solution.
To state my interests and strengths
I am an Oracle and Java developer (not a contributor to Eclipse as yet),
I use Oracle Reports and Java IDE’s in my day-to-day work, although I
wouldn't class myself as an expert in either, more of a generalist
developer. Our site could use BIRT for it’s basic reporting abilities.
Once it comes of age I plan to promote it.
Pain points at the moment are the lack of Java skills in our shop and
the cost of creating or maintaining reports.
Andrew.
