Hello,
I have tried a few times over the last few months to get information
about the status of GEF, but so far haven't gotten anywhere. Posting
here is kind of a last resort, so I apologize if this is inappropriate.
I have asked in the newsgroup a few times about the plans for GEF
and have gotten very little. I can't find a real project plan for it
(other than a mostly empty template), the Europa schedule doesn't have a
link to the plan, and there is almost nothing targeted at 3.3 in bugzilla.
I realize that priorities change and that a project important to me
may not reflect the importance to the whole ecosystem, but I really
would like to know if GEF is not really being maintained anymore so I
can make decisions about my products accordingly.
A bigger question is who to ask when things like this happen, or
what is the process for getting info. I have looked through the docs
and contact options, but I haven't seen this discussed. Addressing it
here would maybe answer the question for others as well.
thanks,
adam

I'll let GEF folks talk about GEF, but I'll speak to process.
First, you did the right thing, just keep asking until you get
an answer. First start with newsgroups, then a polite question on
dev lists (if not response on newsgroups). And, if no response
from dev list, then a not to a PMC member (or, the pmc mailing list)
would probably be in order. I believe GEF is in the Tools project.
Then, if no resposne from the PMC, the Eclipse Foundation
(this mailing list) is a good place. If no response there,
you can bet the project will be "retired" as an inactive project soon --
which is _NOT_ the case for GEF. I know it is activly maintained,
thought not sure they have lots of feature enhancements planned.

Hi Adam,
I am very confused by your query as reviewing the GEF newsgroup history
reveals myself and others in the GEF community have answered your questions.
As well there is only one feature request open in Bugzilla against GEF that
you have raised, yet it contains no comment or indication as being a
critical issue for an upcoming release. (And you have not made any
contribution to it getting fixed either).
I would suggest you communicate to the GEF community via the GEF newsgroup
and through Bugzilla what you are looking for.
P.S. You already asked where the GEF project plan for 3.3 is in the GEF
newsgroup and we indicated its location (there is a link to it on the main
GEF page to boot).
Cheers...

Anthony,
I have the link to the project plan,
http://www.eclipse.org/gef/plan/gef_plan_3_3.php, but as I said, there
is no substance, so please let me know if this link is incorrect. When
I have asked, you said that 3.3 will focus on the huge backlog of
defects, but little is either fixed or planned for 3.3. When I
specifically asked you which bugs were planned here
http://dev.eclipse.org/newslists/news.eclipse.tools.gef/msg1 8369.html, I
got _no_ response. If the project plan is accurate, how are the themes
to be met without planned changes?
As for my personal involvement, I don't see how providing additional
bug reports when there is a huge backlog would help anything. I do
spend time searching bugzilla and the newsgroup before adding more bugs
and my problems are already there.
All I'm really looking for is something like "Yes, things are planned
and here they are", or "No, we don't plan on fixing things for 3.3",
etc. I feel as though this is important information for me to properly
plan products based on these frameworks. Since the Eclipse Development
process is supposed to be transparent, I don't feel this is too much to ask.
Please let me know if this does not clear up your confusion and I
will try to provide additional details.
thanks,
adam

Hi Adam.
If a Bugzilla is not assigned to a milestone, your best bet is to add a
comment that you are interested in seeing the issue fixed and cc yourself to
the Bugzilla. Even better would be to pitch in a offer to contribute a patch
that fixes the issue.
Cheers...

Thanks for the info Anthony. I'm looking through the docs on the EDP so I
can start trying to contribute. In the meantime, could you please tell me
if you have anything specific planned for 3.3? Also, what is the timeframe
for submitting patches to be considered for 3.3?
