some basic data mining. We have data scattered across multiple
(seemingly unrelated) tables and databases. Our users wish to query
data across these tables and databases without having to be SQL
experts. We need the ability to display the data in a single table
from multiple sources where a field in one table might be found as a
primary key in a completely different (legacy) database. We are
currently experimenting with an emf model of the meta data in a
database that will allow users to discover commonality between
databases, allow developers to design in commonality into new
databases, and hide ugly table and column names from users. Have I
come to the right place?

Bryan,
DTP is certainly interested in this type of technology, though we do not
currently have plans for the exact requirements you mention. Are you
offering to work on such with us? :-)

I would be interested in working with the group on this type of
technology. I'll have to go through a painfull process with my
employer to get permission (which is ironic given how much we already
contribute to Eclipse), but if the group is interested in this type of
technology, I'd be willing to persue the necessary permission from my
employer.
I would see two areas that I might be able to provide a useful contribution:
1) Modeling database meta-data to support dynamic data discovery and
cross database datamining
2) UI framework for building datamining tools
I should mention that I am by no means a database expert - this just
happens to be an area I've been exploring, from an end-user point of
view, for a year or so with some success.
Feel free to email me (bhunt at mac dot com) if you would like to
discuss further.
