Hi, I can't find any decent answer to this, but it seems like it's not
possible to upgrade the Eclipse IDE itself? I've used Eclipse for two
years, now, but haven't paid much attention to the complicated internals.
It seems the recommended way to upgrade from say, Eclipse 3.3.2 to 3.3.4
is to extract the new version archive to a new folder and trash the old
one.

Why can't this be done with the update manager? It seems like a ridiculous
oversight which makes upgrading between releases of the Eclipse platform
extremely difficult, while updating minor components is made easy.

Say it ain't so?

For a couple of releases, it has been easy to go upgrade to point
releases. i.e. 3.2.1 to 3.2.2 or 3.3.1 to 3.3.2. With p2 in 3.4, it's
possible to go 3.4 to 3.5.

Later,
