What is the relationship between Eclipse & Ganymede Repositories? [message #330405] Mon, 28 July 2008 11:46 Go to next message

Hi All,

I have created internal mirror of the Ganymede and Eclipse repositories. I
did a quick diff on the features/plugins in these repositories & it seems
that Ganymede is almost a superset of Eclipse but not quite: it is missing
some stuff only found in Eclipse. I am trying to work out if I really do
need to mirror both sites or whether Ganymede would be sufficient.

Questions:

1. Can anyone explain the intent here? What is the relationship between
the 2 sites?

2. Also, can anyone tell me if the .blobstore folder found in mirrored
repositories is needed? Can it be deleted to save space?

Thanks,

Miles

Can you be a little more specific about what you mean by the "Eclipse
repository"? Sorry, but it's a heavily overloaded term and I don't want
to encourage assumptions...

I believe the term "Ganymede" refers to a particular coordinated release
of a set of Eclipse 3.4 projects. That is, "Ganymede" is "the Eclipse
Project, WTP, DTP, CDT, JDT, etc. and so on, all version 3.4, all
released on June whateverth 2008." So, it is a superset of the Eclipse
Project, and also a superset of various other projects, but it is quite
possible that any specific project has since added other files. Put
differently: Ganymede is a snapshot of a bunch of parallel development
efforts.

(For comparison, "Europa" was last year's equivalent to Ganymede.)

Eclipse Repository: http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.4/
Ganymede Repository: http://download.eclipse.org/releases/ganymede/

Right: but is Ganymede a true superset? (There are things in the Eclipse
platform site that are not in Ganymede.)
