I do java development on Linux with Eclipse. Over a period of more than a
year I have a problem occur where at random times X becomes non-responsive
to input or mouse and consumes all the processor, pegs the machine. To fix
this I have to restart X, and of course all of my windows... The keyboard
and mouse do not work, I have to ssh in from another machine to kill X.

Originally I suspected other Linux apps so I stopped using Firefox, and it
happened, then Evolution, and it happened again. So I switched Linux
distros from Fedora to Ubuntu, it happened again. The one thing common to
all my testing and experimenting is my continued use of Eclipse.

The problem has occurred with Eclipse 3.2, 3.3, and just today with 3.4M6.

I find no errors in any logs that I can find. I have run eclipse from
terminal window but I lose that when I have to kill X.

Has ANYONE seen this.??

My group is starting to move toward Eclipse for java development in a big
way and I have had at least two other developers experience this problem.
One uses gnome on RedHat Enterprise 9, the other KDE on Fedora Core 6.

I will do anyting I can to help to diagnose the problem please let me know.

I am cross posting to the platform group as well.

Thanks for any help,
Mark.

Hi,

1. Do *not* cross post and if you'll have to please in one post to
multiple newsgroups.

2. If this happens you should try to get a thread dump [1] or on linux
you can even attach yourself to a running process and see what is going
on using strace.

Use the information you'll collect and create a bug report with the
information.
