Wayne,
I'd recommend that you look at IProgressService. Sounds like you want to
use the following:
PlatformUI.getWorkbench().getProgressService().busyCursorWhi le(Runnable r);

Another option, if you're in an swt-only context, is to use
BusyIndicator.showWhile(Display, Runnable).
