How to Check Database Connection and displyaing erro msg [message #249955]

When am running reports if database connection is down stil its keep
trying to run report , instead I want to check database connection is
available or not and if not available i want to display an error msg like
'unable to connect database' or something other

Anyone can plz give any solution to do this
