Gmf documentation? [message #20818] Wed, 16 August 2006 15:19 Go to next message

Hi,
Sorry to ask such a silly question, but am I missing something about the
gmf documentation? I mean, where is it? Other than the tutorials and
faq, there is not much to read. Under the wiki, there is a documentation
part, but only models exist under it.
Overall, the documentation seems very disconnected, and many points
arise as I read it. (there are tips for gmf, but they make me search for
more docs...) There are a zillion questions, but I can't find docs like
in emf of gef. On the other hand everyone on this list, and the one
which appears to be closed now, seems to know the subject pretty well :)
So am I plain stupid or should I be looking at somewhere else?
Best Regards

Hi Seref,

Other documentation you have not listed below is the "GMF Developer Guide"
documentation at http://help.eclipse.org/help31/index.jsp

This documentation is also available in the GMF SDK (Help + Help Contents in
Eclipse).

Cheers...
Anthony

There is online documentation posted here:
http://help.eclipse.org/help31/index.jsp which is the same as what you'll
find in the standard Help when installing the SDK.

Otherwise, there is unfortunately no better source of information than what
you've mentioned (newsgroup, wiki, tutorial). We had initially held off on
detailed docs until 1.0 was out, which means we have no excuse now ;) With
that, of course... We gladly accept contributions in this area.

Best Regards,
Rich

Richard and Anthony,
First of all, thanks a lot!. It's kinda my fault though, since I
extracted the sdk to wrong level in my development setup, and to right
one in the target :) That's why I missed the help
For the docs Richard, I'd be more than happy to contribute as soon as I
figure out the general architecture and functionality.
Gmf is a great approach, and I believe it has many potential
applications. I am particularly interested in healthcare, since HL7
version 3 is built on a reference information model, I am working on the
concept of a set of model driven development tools based on medical
domain models. Oh whatever, I should go back to reading.
Thanks again
Regards
Seref

Hi Seref,

"disconnected" is the correct term ;-)

So far, the only sources of information are this newsgroup and the
tutorials as described in the Wiki (see eclipse.org/gmf). There are some
interesting articles in the GMF Help-Plugin (appears in Eclipse standard
help menu after installing GMF).

I consider it a good starting point to first of all walkthrough all the
three parts of the tutorial and then deepen the understanding of EMF and
GEF on the appropriate websites (the overview articles should suffice).

Best regards,

Martin
