I've been playing with the report designer and I haven't found a way to
overlap report items. Is there a way?
On a related note, I haven't found a way to give absolute positions to
report items. Again, is there a way I'm missing?

BIRT uses relative positioning with report elements within a container. You
can set various positioning values on tables, list and grids, but adding two
elements to the same cell in a table will show one above the other. You can
use visibillity to achieve "show this or this" type of functionallity. For
example if you could put two data elements in column 3 of a table and use
the visibillity expression to determine which one is displayed. You could
also just use the expression to determine the value of one data element.
What are you trying to achieve?
