I posted a sort of related question on GMF then thought the fundermental
question is really for here.
So my question is How do you know why a plugin didn't start (say a dependant
jar is not there or incorrect version is missing or wrong Java JRE version
.. . . etc.).
I look at the Error log view in Eclipse but its empty, I look at the
console but empty.
Any help would be good,
Stu

Stu,
Typically the Error Log view (or the <workspace>/.metadata/.log) will
show diagnostics about what's gone wrong.

This is not an easy question to answer nor a simple problem to solve.
See these bug reports for all the gory details:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=174515
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=155897
Hope this helps,

If you add the -debug command line option you may get more information.
(There are also a host of more detailed debug options that can be turned on
using a .options file.)
