Yet Sun's jvm detector reports my system as having 1.5.0_09.
Can epf only be run with a specific version of the jvm, or have I missed
something when installing?

So make sure you PATH variables are correct to point to correct SUN JVM.

(Unfortunately?) installing a newer JRE/JDK doesn't remove the older
ones. I recall having a problem with an old install of 1.3.x of the JRE
that never quite got removed completely.
