I have Eclipse 3.2.1 and I wish to install 3.3M5 and retain all my settings.
What's the correct way to do this? Is it just a case of unzipping the
folder contents on top of the existing files?

No, definitely don't do that - it will not work.
You have two options:
A) Install 3.3 seperately but point it to your existing workspace when
it starts up. Eclipse stores all your Preferences in the workspace. Just
make sure to back up the workspace because once you touch it with 3.3 it
will not longer be compatible with 3.2
B) You can use a new workspace for 3.3 but export all Preferences
settings from 3.2 via the menu File > Export

Hope this helps,
Eric

I just renamed my old eclipse directory (3.2.2 + some callisto
components - CDT, etc.) out of the way, and unpacked the new eclipse
(virgin 3.3M6 zip from eclipse.org) in its place.

I got one "error" when opening an existing workspace (because of some
setting for a component that was not in the new zip - a component I
don't use anyway), but after that everything's just fine. It was a very
smooth transition.
