Database Explorer [message #1329] Thu, 22 September 2005 14:38 Go to next message

It appears that Database Explorer only works with databases that it knows
about. My problem is that I want it to view Hypersonic and a really
non-standard database that lives out on a mainframe. SQL Explorer allows me
to add drivers to view both of these databases. It appears that Database
Explorer does not allow that capability. Based on this, as well as other
comments I've read in this ng, Database Explorer doesn't seem ready for
prime time.

What are the plans for Database Explorer?

Thanks,

Dave

BTW: I don't know if this makes a difference, but this is the Database
Explorer packaged with Web Tools.

The Database Explorer currently found in DTP/CVS is a port (package/plugin
rename) of that contained in WTP/rdb. Going forward, DTP will have the
Data Source Explorer (DSE), which merges the code contributions around
this functionality. DSE is not ready for prime time, but, when it (and the
other components in the Connectivity project) are, you will be able to
contribute to an extension point to work with databases such as Hypersonic.

As for the release schedule, DSE is currently scheduled for DTP 0.N/M3,
which would thus makes it early 6Q1. We are evaluating, however, whether
DSE can be pulled back into 5Q1 (that is DTP 0.N/M2). Please stay tuned to
the DTP site for details as the project schedule is fleshed out in more
detail.

Thanks John, that helps a lot. I'm mostly interested in where it's headed,
now necessarily where it is at this point in time.
