I'm running eclipse 3.1.1 on my Dell Windows XP Pro machine with no problem.
I just got a new IBM (Lenovo) ThinkCentre, also with Windows XP Pro on it.
It came with the following JRE pre-installed:
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2)
Classic VM (build 1.4.2, J2RE 1.4.2 IBM Windows 32 build cn142-20040926 (JIT
enabled: jitc))
When I run Eclipse, the "Workspace Launcher" dialog has no text on the
buttons or the checkbox. If I choose the button that should say "OK", the
IDE opens up and all of the toolbar icons are black squares.
However, if instead I click "Browse" and choose a workspace directory (even
if its the same one), then the toolbar icons are fine.
I tried checking the "do not ask again" checkbox, and now my icons are
always blacked out.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Is there a workaround (other than
havening to change workspaces every time)? Do I need a different JRE?
Thanks,
Chris Nash

This very weird problem sounds vaguely familiar. I'd suggest posting in
the eclipse.platform.swt newsgroup, as you're likely to get more
information from the SWT developers there. A screenshot if you can make
it would be helpful as well.
Hope this helps,
- Jeff

A google search turned up two other people with the same problem but no
answers. :(
I'll do as you suggest and post on the other group.
