I know that by using templates it is possible to insert a header into java
code (by header I mean copyright notice, change date etc.). This seems to
apply to newly created files within a project. However, I'm interested to
know whether this can be done in retrospect for existing code imported
into Eclipse (preferably in batch)?

Many thanks.

my estimate on the size of a plugin that would go and stuff a comment
into every single java file is something < 40 lines of code

actually, eclipse releng does that already, you could ask them - they
must have a tool for it
