Hi,
I'm using the Ant plugin and Ant is not working the way that the book I
have (Ant - The Definitive Guide by Steve Holzner) says it should.
My build.xml file correctly appears in the Ant window and I can
double-click tasks to get them to run. I want Ant to run with the
"-verbose" option so I can see what is going on but I can't find out how
to do this in eclipse.
One of the "Window > Prefs > Ant > General > Ant color options" is "Ant
verbose message in console", so I imagine it can be done; I just don't
see how. Can someone please help?
Thanks,
Larry
P.S What the heck, as long as I'm here... when I am editing my build.xml
Ant script every time I hit 'Enter' I get an automatic indent along with
the return. How do I turn the auto-indent feature off? I looked all over
the place but could not find the setting.
P.P.S. What the heck (again ;-), as long as I'm on the topic... I am
unsure as to how I feel about the truly enormous number of options that
eclipse provides. On the one hand I guess it's a good thing, but on the
other it oftentimes leads to a lot of wasted time trying to find out how
to turn something on or off, or to figure out where a particular setting
is buried. A perusal of this newsgroup on any given day will bear that
sentiment out.
I think the fact that eclipse is open source - which means many people
can contribute to it - is a good thing, but it also seems to lead to a
stampede of people adding options and/or features. (There was a recent
post on the JavaLobby about this - something to the effect of "Do too
many cooks spoil the [eclipse] broth"?)
And as developers we all know that the fun part is coding and the boring
part is documentation, which means that the accompanying doc for eclipse
is often lagging, incomplete, or just plain wrong - which adds to the
frustration and wasted time.
I don't know the answer to this and I certainly don't want to start
trouble; it's just that I (a) care and (b) can't stop these musings
after spending frustrating hour after frustrating hour time and time
again. And again, one need only check this newsgroup to see that there
are legions of people with the same problem. In addition to answering
each individual question, i.e. "tree", should some people be taking a
step back and looking at what this "forest" of problems is actually saying?
Like I said, I don't know. But maybe two observations are relevant (or
maybe I should just start putting less Jamesons in my morning cofee :-)
1) Just because you can do something doesn't mean you always should.
2) We all know THE ONE BIG COMPLAINT about arguably the most famous
software program of all time - Microsoft Word: It is too hard and
downright frustrating to use because there are too many options. This
obviously holds true for novices, but I have worked with many seasoned
tech writers who constantly swear at this product. (And I'm sure you
have, too.) I guess I just don't want eclipse to collapse under its own
weight.
Anyway, thanks to anyone who can answer my original two questions.

Thanks a bunch, Darin. And no, I have no intention to log a request for
enhancement. Let's face it, how could I after my little rant? :-)
Thanks again,
