Been working with Eclipse for about 7-8 months now, and I have to say I
still can't get plugins to work reliably.

Eclipse not tell me what's wrong!

"An error with the workbench has occured",
Or, right now Java compilation simply wont work after getting rid of
PHPEclipse. It warned me before I tried to remove it "Current
configuration has errors, and workbench might have errors after"

I went ahead anyway, hoping to fix the errors after, but it really just
doesn't work.

How can I make my plugins behave in a stable manner? This is really quite
ridiculous and definitely the worst part of the Eclipse platform.

I only had two plugins as part of this configuration: The WTP 1.0 and
PhpEclipse. WTP never worked at all, I downloaded the "full runtime"
version only. Only GEF showed up.

Seriously, someone please tell me what to do, since I want to fix this.
Right now, I'm installing a fresh copy to fix this...

The plugins promise to be so cool, but without stability and ease of use
they're useless.

Just a heads up,
I tried the -clean many times, and deleted items within the configuration
area. The readme also has a way to resolve it with finding disabled, but
the
plugin doesn't even show up in there...

windows xp.

any help is appreciated!

What are the exact steps you are using to install your plug-ins? Are
you sure your version of Eclipse is compatible with the plug-ins you are
installing? Have you considered downloading the WTP all in one package?

For reference, these are the steps I use to install Eclipse on Windows:
1) Create a folder for the eclipse version I'm installing, e.g.
eclipse-3.1.1
2) Copy the eclipse zip and any plug-in zips to this directory
3) Unzip eclipse using my zip client's "Extract to here" Make sure your
zip client maintains the directory structure
4) Unzip the plug-ins using "Extract to here"
5) Change to the new eclipse subdirectory
6) Run eclipse.exe

If this doesn't work, it's possible that the metadata in your workspace
is corrupt. Try a new workspace.

Hope this helps,
- Jeff
