Apologies if this is an old issue. Our search revealed one bug fix in
3.1.1 concerning dual head monitors that is not related to this problem.

SITUATION: My team uses several completely different PC's with different
video cards. All of these PC's have dual monitors. Some of us use
Windows XP, some 2000.

Typically, we have only code editing windows open in Eclipse's main
window. The Package Explorer, Outline, Console, and other ancillary
function panes are dragged out of the main window and are viewed on the
second monitor.

(after using dual monitors for awhile, going back to a single monitor
feels like playing tennis in a closet. Tell your boss 2x 17" 1280x1024
flat panels costs less than one 20")

PROBLEM:

1. We click in the Package Explorer window on the second monitor.
2. The main Eclipse window in the first monitor takes on the inactive,
grayed look.
3. All menus and toolbar buttons in Eclipse's main window are disabled and
do not work.
4. We have to open a file in Eclipse's main window and click inside its
editing window to enable menus and buttons on the main window.
5. This problem occurs on all of our various PC's.

Is this a bug in Windows or Eclipse?

Is there a workaround?

TIA,
Bill

I don't use Eclipse that way, I just have only one window and I make it
big enough to fill both monitors. Eclipse remembers the size and position
of the window between sessions (at least in v3.1.1 is does).

If you are expecting both windows to be active at the same time, then I
think you're out of luck. I believe all windowing systems work that way,
in that there can be only one active window at a time.

I use Eclipse on Quad monitors and I see the same behaviour. But because
I always have an Editor window open on the main monitor I just click
in there first.

It would seem to me that this is a bug.

Alternative is to make the main window large and span multiple monitors
but that limits things quiet a bit because the desktop underneath is
hiden and then you are also not using the floating-windows concept the
way it was intended to be used.

Cheers,
mark....

Hi Chris, I just read your post after I replied to the same topic.

I don't think the person is expecting both windows to be active at the
same time. What happens is that Menus at the top of the main window
beccome unclicable when one of the floating windows is selected. So you
can't access the File, Edit, Navigate, Search, Project, etc... menus in
the main window when you were just working in one of the floating windows.

Seems to be a problem related with focus. The floating window does not
release focus properly to the new window under certain conditions. But
clicking into an Editor window when its in the main window with all the
menus, fixes the focus and menus are then clickable.

Like I said, this really does seem like a little bug. Its not a big
problem for me because I always have an editor or a dozen open so I
click in there quickly and get the focus right.

Cheers,
mark....
