Upgrading to a new version of Eclipse [message #2412] Sat, 15 January 2005 11:47 Go to next message

I am looking for soem doc on upgrading to a newer version of Eclipse. I have
used the Software updates feature off the Help dropdown. What is the
procedure when I want to move from 3.0.1 to 3.1? Especially if I want to
keep my preferences and projects?

Thanks

Roland

Hi Roland,

I've found the following works.

1)Delete everything under the eclipse install directory except the
workspaces directory.
2)Download the latest version from the eclipse downloads page and unzip it
into the old eclipse directory.

That seems to pick up all the old projects automatically and all my plugins
worked as well. HOWEVER - when I then tried to install the webtools project
it wouldn't recognise it. So I moved my old directory out of the way and did
a clean install of eclipse plus webtools which worked. Then I just imported
all of my projects/workspaces from the old renamed directory structure.

There apparently is an "eclipse clean" or "eclipse clear" you can run to
save doing all the directory renaming and imports, but I don't know where
that is.

Dave.

There are no problems with preferences and projects - export
preferences from previous version and export into current works for me.

I have two suggestions:
- use separate install location for third-party plugins;
- use $ECLIPSE_HOME/ as install location only for version-specific
Eclipse plug-ins;

It's better to have the workspace at a different place and start Eclipse
using -data

Add -clean to the command line arguments (remove it after starting up once).
