I've been frustrated w/ Eclipse's poor embedded debugging support, so I signed up for this newsgroup as soon as I heard about it. I've got two questions about this project:
1. I'm probably being paranoid, but with the number of OS vendors partnering for this project, I'm a little worried about bare metal target support, which seems like it is one of my current barriers to using Eclipse for my embedded development. I guess this isn't a question but a request for reassurance. ;-)
2. What kind of time frame should we be thinking about for something usable to come out of this project? Late 2005? Early 2006? Later? I know it's _way_ too early for anything near a solid estimate, but I'm just looking for a gut feeling on how soon requirements could be worked out and the basics could be worked out.

Hi Bryce,
1. Adding to what Martin said, several of the companies participating in
the Device Debugging and Target Management subprojects are interested in
bare-metal connectivity. For example, Wind River and Accelerated
Technologies have both made many proprietary extensions to Eclipse to
support JTAG-based connectivity, and we are both interested in
standardization and extension of the debug platform in this area.
2. It is very early in the process to pick a release date, but at the
Device Debug meeting in Chicago, we discussed aligning our first release
with Eclipse 3.2 in Spring 2006. I'm sure we will release milestone
builds along the way, too. We are in the requirements gathering phase
right now for both Target Management and Device Debugging.
I'll echo what Martin said, please comment on your use cases and what
you're looking for from Eclipse and DSDP. :)

Hello Bryce,
Bare metal embedded development definitely had representation at the debug
meetings - as it happens this is one of the areas that we are very
interested in.
I suppose you can breathe a little easier now. :^)
Can you tell the newsgroup a little more about your interest in embedded
debug and Eclipse? i.e. What are the most significant issues that you have
with embedded debugging and Eclipse that you are looking to be solved?
Are you currently using some kind of Eclipse based solution for the
devices you are targetting?
