How to view a corrupted Local History? [message #265823] Fri, 06 August 2004 20:52 Go to next message

Hi, all.

Imagine you're developing away in one Windows directory (or unix), and you
decide to delete a directory next to it, only, instead of Windows deleting
the directory you asked it to delete, Windows decides to delete another
directory... the directory with your latest-greatest source code. So you
think to yourself, ok, I'll just pull my source code back from the recycle
bin, and I'm back in business...only you go to the recycle bin and lo and
behold, your source code directory isn't there either!

That's analogously what has just happened to me in Eclipse/CVS. Somehow
(we're not sure how yet) when I asked Eclipse to delete my J2EE
Application Client project, instead it decided to delete my EJB project
(with a full day's heavy java coding in it)!!

Nothing shows up in the recycle bin , which is somewhat understandable
from Eclipse's point of view, but nothing shows up in the Local History
either, which is not understandable to me at all.

So, next, on advice from IBM, I update my workspace from CVS, thinking
that should allow Eclipse to reconnect my project name and all my java
filenames to the Local History, only it didn't. So now, it appears that I
will have to re-code an entire day's worth of java programming...not fun.

My only hope is that there is a utility by which I can more primitively
view the Local History and get back my changes, or in some other way, get
Eclipse to consider the CVS-downloaded files as the base files, i.e.
connect them properly to the Local History...or any other way to get my
code back, elegant or hack.

Any ideas?

FYI, simple binary file utilities, such as powerGREP do a pretty good job,
allowing you to find your changes in the binary files, and get some of
your changes back.
