Hi there,
Yes, it's the same people behind SAFARI and the Eclipse IMP (us) :-), and
it's essentially intended to be a continuation and expansion of that effort
into the Eclipse open-source community. We've gotten a lot of interest over
the last year from people wanting to use IMP to build IDEs as well as people
wanting to extend it.
Due to the obvious name clash with the Apple web browser, however, we were
forced to rename the project. So, the new name is "The Eclipse IDE Meta-tooling
Platform", "The Eclipse IMP", or just "IMP".
The only other "difference" between SAFARI and the Eclipse IMP is that we're
offering to seed the Eclipse IMP project with the SAFARI code base, but that's
not a requirement for the creation of the Eclipse IMP project on eclipse.org.
So although it seems unlikely that the Eclipse IMP wouldn't use the SAFARI
code base as the starting point, it's theoretically possible.
