Slow renaming/moving/deleting [message #18262]

Renaming or moving or deleting a directory that contains a few dozen files
totaling maybe a few megabytes seems to take orders of magnitudes (i.e. up
to a minute or longer) longer than doing the same operation on the file
system (even if you were to create backup copies of all affected files).
Is this to be expected? Moreover, while the operation is running, a modal
dialog is shown, so you can't do anything else...

Should add to this that committing these directory changes takes even
longer (up to half an hour!). Lots of time seems to be spent with:
