BIRT experiences with pagination and Double column pages [message #190826] Mon, 18 September 2006 12:08

My opinion

Birt seems to be quite limited regarding the control of pagination and
column breaks. All I want to do is output a list on names and addresses,
from a database (mySQL) for printing on sticky labels. Of course this also
requires accurate pixel control and ideally a WYSYWYG editor.

I cannot see how to get multiple columns within a page, nor how to
accurately control elements on a page to pixel accuracy. Maybe I am
missing something but this seems to be fundamental to producing reports. I
also cannot control where tables do their pagination, as BIRT does not
seem to have access to page information.

Because of the time I have used up with BIRT, I am considering moving to
another report generator, despite many features of Birt which I like.

So I decided to try out Jasper reports. It took me a very short time (30
minutes) to produce a Jasper report with 2 or 3 columns of paginated names
and addresses. Jasper also has genuine WYSIWYG layout which BIRT does not.
In BIRT You just cannot see what you will get until you start up a browser
and view the PDF, which incidentally is very slow concurring with previous
posts on the slowness of the PDF emitter.

In jasper, I just edit properties and change columns to whatever I like,
and I can crate individual boxes, again WYSIWYG which are repeated as the
page is created.

So my questions before switching are ...

Is there an easy (or indeed any) way to create double/triple column pages?
Can I properly control pagination within tables ?
What is the recommended way to control layout with pixel accuracy?
Is there anywhere an objective comparison between BIRT and say "JASPER"
