Hi Everybody,

I am using birt 2.1.0 from about a month. Now I am feeling comfortable with
this. I tried to design few reports and liked the way it provides functionality
with simplicity.

When I am running reports against huge amount of data, its very slow. Usually
to run the same SQL query in database viewer takes very less. With my experience
I learned that its because BIRT generates the layout and other things. So
first complete report is constructed and then its displayed / rendered on
the viewer component. (Please correct me if I am wrong)

Now, I was wondering how to optimize the design of the report so that I can
get faster execution and full functionality. I want to learn few things about
BIRT architecture, BIRT team members will be able to answer this quickly.
I have few questions regarding this -

1. What is the job of Birt Data Engine? What services are provided by this
Engine?
2. When I submit a SQL query to BIRT it runs it without modifying it. So
there aren't any optimizations implemented by BIRT. Please confirm this.
3. OLAP is currently not supported by BIRT. Please confirm this.
4. Can anybody provide few tips or hints regarding usage of scripts to implement
lazy loading of data in any report. Or at least to speed up the execution
of reports.

Keep up the good work!

-Sachin
