It seems like this ought to be settable via
Windows/Preferences/Workbench/Colors and Fonts/Java Editor text. But here,
I can only change the font. There does not seem to be any way to change
the background color. I've looked all through the maze of color settings
to no avail.
Also, there are no font/color settings under Java/Appearance.
I've found a bunch of references to using Xdefaults, gtkrc, etc. for this,
but none of these are working, even after xrdb -merge, and restarting X.
It would seem natural that Eclipse*background: #7a7a7a should work, but it
doesn't.
I've also tried using the KDE control manager to set fonts and colors but
Eclipse seems insensitive to these as well.
I'm surprised at how hard this is. Can someone offer a suggestion?

This should be '3.1', not '4.1'.

Yes, this works for me. Thanks. To find the background color organized
under the syntax tab was unexpected. I still wonder what is meant by
`System default' under Linux. I guess it means whatever you get from the
Window system when you don't specify a color.

Afaik the motif version of Eclipse uses Xdefaults, the GTK version of
Eclipse uses the current gtk theme to get 'system default' values. In the
SWT FAQ there is some information about setting these values:
