how do I get into the Visual Editor? [message #165616] Mon, 14 August 2006 19:15 Go to next message

I've finally got the VE to install on my 3.1.2 Debian Eclipse package.
It seems I had select v1.1.0.1 as v1.2 doesn't work on 3.1.2 (at least,
it wouldn't let me install it). I've verified that the "feature" and
"plugin" are installed by checking the the Help | About dialogue.

According to the "Build GUIs with the Eclipse Visual Editor project"
( http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os- ecvisual/),
I should now have an option to create a new "visual" class in my
project's context menu. However, it doesn't appear to be there. And yes,
I have restarted eclipse (several times) since installing VE.

Also, does anyone know why most of the documents in the VEP part of the
eclipse site are empty? The only ones that seem to be accessible are
those that are on other sites.

I found another document which said that I can select the Visual Editor
from the editor list in the "Open With" dialogue for .java files.
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear there either.

According to Help | Software Updates | Find and Install | Search for
updates, I am up to date. However, the Search for new features does show
the later 1.2 version of Visual Editor, but won't let me install it.

Have you installed all of the plugins that the VE plugin depends on?

I followed the VE FAQ on how to install, except I started with the
Debian package. According to the FAQ, I needed to install VE
SDK 1.1.0.1, EMF SDK 2.1.2 and GEF 3.1.1. It also mentions in the
verification that I should have org.eclipse.jem and org.eclipse.ve in
the Feature Details. My feature details show, among other things:

org.eclipse.emf 2.2.0 (later than the 2.1.2 specified)
org.eclipse.sdk 3.1.2
org.eclipse.gef 3.1.1
org.eclipse.jem.sdk 1.1.0.1 (no listing of just jem)
org.eclipse.ve 1.1.0.1

EMF 2.2.0 is not compatible with Eclipse 3.1 and the rest of those
plug-ins. You'll need to install 2.1 for the VE to run.

Hope this helps,
- Jeff

It would, if I could get EMF 2.1 to install. When I try to install
anything earlier, the download sites only show the VE 1.2 version (the
others don't show anything). I've unchecked the "only show latest
versions" box but they still don't show the earlier versions.

I tried rolling back to an earlier configuration that didn't have
anything extra installed but after doing that, I still get the same problem.

Finally, I tried removing the extra remote sites then setting them up
again (restarting in between). Still no luck. I can't seen anything in
EMF or Old Eclipse, and just the 1.2 version in VE.

I even tried "eclipse -clean &" and that didn't help.

I'm confused. Are you installing VE using the Update Manager? Which
update site are you using? I'd suggest starting from a clean
installation of Eclipse (preferably Eclipse 3.2) and using the Update
Manager. Pick the VE version that works with your version of Eclipse
(1.1 for Eclipse 3.1, 1.2 for Eclipse 3.2) Then hit the Select Required
button to select the required versions of EMF and GEF.

Hope this helps,

- Jeff

Yes, I am using the update manager (Help | software update | find &
install| search for new features..." as outlined in the VE FAQ.

I'm running Debian/Etch (testing), which has the 3.1.2 version of
Eclipse. Going back to "clean" is pretty much what I thought I did when
I rolled back (manage configuration | revert to previous...) and
selected the earliest configuration listed. It seems to have removed
everything but now I can't install anything! The update manager refuses
to list anything but VE 1.2 (which it won't let me install).

I just removed Eclipse and reinstalled it. In between, I wiped out my
workspace folder. Still, I'm back where I was. All I can get is the VE
1.2. For some reason, it didn't even lose the remote sites I had added
to the original install!

Is there a way of manually removing Eclipse (which folders contain the
configuration information)?

Gary,

In a traditional Eclipse installation, removing the eclipse directory
and the workspace is suffient to fully remove the software and
configuration. Unzipping the Eclipse archive again will restore it to
the original state. The configuration confusion you seem to be
experiencing may be related to how the debian packages you've installed
were designed. Maybe it'd be easier to avoid all these headaches by
just installing the linux version of Eclipse from the eclipse.org
download page?

OK, I fired up Synaptic and removed everything to do with Eclipse. Then
I removed the .eclipse directory I found in my home directory. After
reinstalling and going through the steps in the VE FAQ again, I now have
VE running.

However, where are the visual classes I'm supposed to be able to create?
When I right-click on my project and select New, I get the same list I
got before installing VE.

I've gone through the SWT docs and added org.eclipse.swt to my project's
build path, but still no visual classes anywhere to be seen. And when I
open a regular class with VE, there are no widgets or anything else I
can see to add. This makes the VE not very visual. :)
